Why Is My Gas Stove Clicking But Not Igniting?
If your gas stove keeps clicking but won't light, don't panic. In many cases, the problem is caused by grease, food debris, or moisture blocking the burner or igniter—not a major appliance failure.
Before requesting a repair, there are a few simple checks you can safely perform that may get your stove working again.
Why Your Stove Clicks
The clicking sound comes from the igniter, which creates a spark to light the gas. If grease, food particles, or moisture cover the igniter or burner ports, the spark may not reach the gas properly, preventing the burner from igniting.
Common causes include:
- Grease buildup around the igniter
- Food debris blocking the burner ports
- Moisture from recent cleaning or spills
- Burner cap not seated correctly
- Dirty burner components
How to Troubleshoot the Problem
Before cleaning, make sure the burner is turned off and has completely cooled.
1. Clean the Burner
Remove the burner cap (if removable) and wipe away grease, food residue, and debris using a soft cloth or sponge. Make sure the small burner holes are free of obstructions.
2. Clean Around the Igniter
Gently clean the ceramic igniter using a soft brush or dry cloth. Be careful not to bend or damage it. Even a small amount of grease can interfere with the spark.
3. Check the Burner Cap
Ensure the burner cap is properly aligned and seated. If it's out of position, the gas may not ignite even though the igniter continues clicking.
4. Allow Moisture to Dry
If you've recently cleaned the stove or spilled liquid on the burner, allow everything to dry completely before trying again. Moisture can temporarily prevent the igniter from working properly.
When to Call for Service
If the burner continues clicking after cleaning and drying, or if you smell gas without ignition, turn the burner off immediately. Do not continue attempting to light it. Contact your property manager (for tenants) or a qualified appliance repair technician (for homeowners) to inspect the stove.
