How to Reset a Garbage Disposal
A garbage disposal is a convenient kitchen appliance that helps break down food waste and keep your sink clean. However, if your garbage disposal suddenly stops working, it doesn't always mean it's broken. In many cases, the unit has simply tripped its safety feature and can be reset in just a few minutes.
Before scheduling a repair, there are a few simple troubleshooting steps you can safely try.
Why Does a Garbage Disposal Stop Working?
Garbage disposals are designed with a built-in safety mechanism that automatically shuts the unit off if it becomes overloaded or jammed. This helps prevent damage to the motor.
Common causes include:
- Too much food placed in the disposal at once
- Hard objects becoming lodged in the blades
- Fibrous foods causing jams
- An overloaded motor
- Foreign objects accidentally falling into the disposal
Step 1: Press the Reset Button
Many garbage disposals have a red reset button located on the bottom or side of the unit.
If the disposal has stopped running:
- Turn the disposal switch off.
- Locate the reset button underneath the unit.
- Press the button firmly.
- Wait a few moments before turning the disposal back on.
In many cases, this restores normal operation.
Step 2: Manually Free the Blades
If pressing the reset button doesn't work, the disposal may be jammed.
Some models include an opening on the bottom of the unit where you can insert the manufacturer's disposal wrench (or the appropriate tool) and gently rotate the motor to free the blades.
Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for your specific model.
Step 3: Remove Visible Obstructions Safely
If an object is lodged inside the disposal:
- Turn off the power to the disposal before inspecting it.
- Never place your hand inside the disposal while it is connected to power.
- Use tongs or pliers to carefully remove any visible object if it can be reached safely.
Once the obstruction is removed, press the reset button and test the unit again.
When to Call for Service
If the garbage disposal still does not operate after these steps, or if it makes unusual noises, leaks, or repeatedly trips, it may require professional repair or replacement.
