Richardson is a city located Dallas and Collin counties in Texas. In 2011 the population was estimated to be 101,742. Richardson is an affluent inner suburb of Dallas and home the Telecom Corridor which is known for its high concentration of telecommunications companies including AT&T, Ericsson, Verizon, Cisco Systems, Samsung, MetroPCS, Texas Instruments, TriQuint Semiconductor, and Fujitsu.

History/Interesting Facts
In 2008, Richardson was ranked as the 18th best place to live in the United States by Money magazine. In 2009, Business Week’s annual report on the “Best Places to Raise Kids,” ranked Richardson 2nd in Texas.

Settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee came to the Richardson area in the 1840s. After the Civil War a railroad was built northwest of the original settlement, shifting the village’s center closer to the railroad. Richardson was chartered in 1873, and the town was named after railroad contractor E.H. Richardson. A red brick schoolhouse was built in 1914. The schoolhouse is now the administrative office for the Richardson Independent School District.

By 2002 Richardson had four Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) light rail stations. Richardson was a “dry city” with no alcohol sales until November 2006, when the local option election passed to allow the sale of beer and wine in grocery and convenience stores.

Richardson has its own Symphony Orchestra, Richardson Community Band, Theatre Centre, Repertory Company Theatre, Chamber Music Society, Visual Art Society and a number of Ballet troupes and other Dance Groups. The City of Richardson boasts the state-of-the-art Eisemann Center for Performing Arts which opened in 2002 and continues to bring nationally recognized entertainers and shows to the area each year.

Notable Areas
The city is served by the Richardson Independent School District (RISD), except for the portion of the city in Collin County, which is served by the Plano Independent School District (PISD).

The RISD and PISD have many Blue Ribbon Schools. The Blue Ribbon Schools Program is a United States government program created to honor schools. The Blue Ribbon award is considered to be the highest honor that an American school can achieve.

Higher education in Richardson includes The University of Texas at Dallas and Richland College, part of the Dallas County Community College District. It is the largest school in the DCCCD, with nearly 14,000 students.

Richardson’s location with major area highways provides convenient access for workers commuting into Richardson. The city has more Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) rail stations than any other Dallas area suburb. The city’s Walk Score is 77 out of 100 or Very Walkable as of June 2011.
