With a recorded population of over 6 million people, Houston ranks in as the most populace city in Texas. On a national level, Houston is the fifth-largest metropolitan area in the United States.

 

Founded in 1836 near Buffalo Bayou, the city gets its name from former General Sam Houston, who commanded and won at the Battle of San Jacinto 25 miles east of where the city was established. Now a thriving city with a broad economy that includes energy, manufacturing, aeronautics, and transportation, Houston has seen growth in recent years due to its economic stability and affordable cost of living.

The Houston Independent School district has many elementary, intermediate and high schools throughout the city and is noted as the seventh-largest school district in the United States. Many of its public schools have received national recognition, including Bellaire High School, named one of the top performing high schools in the United States. Famous names that attended Bellaire High School include actor Dennis Quaid, MLB player José Cruz, Jr. and John Carter, member of the United States Congress.

 

Former HISD employees and teachers who went on to become public figures include Lyndon B. Johnson, the 36th President of the United States, Laura Bush, who later became the First Lady of the United States and Rod Paige, who became the United States Secretary of Education.

 

The University of Houston, a world-renowned institution of higher learning, located in southeast Houston, offers 300 degree programs: 112 bachelors; 131 masters; 54 research doctorates; and three professional doctorate degrees in law, optometry, and pharmacy. Additionally, U of H hosts a variety of theatrical performances, concerts, lectures, and events. It has over 400 student organizations and 16 intercollegiate sports teams.

 

Other schools within Houston include Rice University, San Jacinto College, Lee College and Texas Southern University, one of the largest historically black colleges and universities in the United States.

 

Boasting one of the tallest skylines in North America, Houston’s JPMorgan Chase Tower, formerly Texas Commerce Tower, is the tallest composite building in the world. Below the busy streets lies an interesting surprise to visitors and those new to Houston: Several downtown businesses are connected by an underground system of tunnels, with shops and restaurants strategically placed throughout the underground walkway.

 

Those searching for entertainment, dining and leisure have an array of venues and businesses to choose from. Downtown offers a thriving night scene and the Museum District features several constant and visiting exhibits, as well as a nearby park and zoo. Discovery Green, an eco-friendly park located downtown, hosts outdoor concerts, movie screenings and an ice-skating rink during the winter months.

 

Due to the cultural diversity of the city, festivals are a popular attraction throughout the year. The Caribbean Festival, Asian-American Festival and International Festival are just a few annual events which embrace the food, music and art of various nationalities.

 

Home of the Houston Rockets, Astros and Texans, the city has a longstanding sports legacy and has hosted several professional sporting events, including The 1968 MLB All-Star Game, the 1989, 2006 and 2013 NBA All-Star Game, Super Bowl VIII and Super Bowl XXXVIII, as well as hosting the 2005 World Series and 1981, 1986, 1994 and 1995 NBA Finals. In 2017, the city is slated to host Super Bowl LI in Houston’s Reliant Stadium in 2017.

 

On the collegiate level, Houston is home annual events such as the Shell Houston Open golf tournament, the annual NCAA College Baseball Minute Maid Classic, and NCAA football’s Texas Bowl which takes place every December.
