Why do I have a high water bill?

How a high water bill maybe a sign of a silent leak.

How do you know if you have a silent leak?

  • If you have a high bill, and you cannot figure out how you could have used that amount of water (sometimes thousands of gallons)
  • You do not see any signs of large amounts of water flowing on ground or on ceiling. (if you have tons of water use, you would see signs of it flooding the home)
  • You do not find any signs of water puddling in the middle of the yard and there is no reasonable expectation where the water came from (if pipe is leaking in the yard, then the yard would have water or soggy areas that do not seem to reasonable explanation of why its there.

Why do we share?

We manage properties for our owners, but we want smooth relationships with our tenants. We create these pages to help educate our Houston and Dallas tenants that we hope that they stay for years and have a easy experience. To increase your enjoyment of a home, our property managers compile common issues and repairs that can be avoided by tenants. Remember improper use could lead to huge repair bills which are your liability.

How do you detect a silent leak?

The most likely location for a silent leak is your toilet and the flapper tends to get worn out, and the toilet will keep filling itself up.  To test for a silent leak,

  • You can use food dye tables, Kool aid, or any kind of colored water.
  • You put tablets or colored water in the the tank.
  • Do not flush the bowl
  • If the toilet bow is later seen to have that water color, then it is a sign of a leak.
