Rockwall is a city in Rockwall County, Texas, and part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. It is the county seat of Rockwall County which is the third wealthiest county in the state of Texas.
Though Rockwall County is the smallest county in Texas, it is also one of the top five fastest growing counties in the United States. The current population is 37,490.
In 1851, as the first Anglo-American settlers moved to the area, they started to dig wells. During the excavating, settlers found large underground rock walls. Study of the wall-like features by geologists and archaeologists found them to be jointed, natural sandstone dikes. The town was established April 17, 1854 and named after these natural rock walls.
The city is served by the Rockwall Independent School District. There are two high schools in Rockwall. The older is Rockwall High School and the newer is Rockwall-Heath High School built in 2005.
The city is home to the Higher Education Center at Rockwall, which is part of the community college district, Collin College. Texas A&M University-Commerce holds classes at the Center. Texas A&M University-Commerce also has a campus located at the Rockwall Technology Park.
For entertainment residents have the Harbor Rockwall. The Harbor Rockwall is home to fabulous waterfront restaurants, a major movie theater, delightful retail stores, open air festivals and special seasonal events.
The “Concert on the Lake” series, sponsored by the City of Rockwall, is held every Thursday evening from mid-May to mid-August at The Harbor.
