Formerly known as “Cane Island,” Katy, Texas has become a popular location for families seeking suburban life just outside the city of Houston.

Clocking in with a reported population of just over 14,000 people, Katy was named as one of “9 from 2009” most notable high-growth areas in the United States according to a 2009 report from the Gadberry Group.

History/Interesting Facts
Each year, the city holds the Katy Rice Harvest Festival. The annual event consists of two days of live entertainment, craft and food booths, a carnival and more. The population boom has led many businesses and retail outlets to the city, most notably Katy Mills Mall. Since 1999, Katy Mills has provided a unique shopping experience for residents and visitors alike, with over 1.3 million square feet of retail space, a movie theater, indoor trolley, and various restaurants.

School- aged children living in the Katy area are zoned to the Katy Independent School District. With over 60,000 students enrolled, KISD has 25 elementary schools, 12 middle schools and seven high schools.

Like many areas just outside of Houston, Katy is served by the Houston Community College System as HCC Northwest College is located within an unincorporated section of Harris County. Another institution, The University of Houston System at Cinco Ranch, offers students the opportunity to earn a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a variety of areas including History, English, or various fields of Science or Business.

In 2010, The Bible Seminary came to Katy. The school offers an 8-course Bible Certificate program for laity, as well as a 32-course, 96-hour Master of Divinity program for professional, vocational ministry training.

Known around the state for its competitive athletic program, The Katy Tigers of Katy High School have taken the 5A state football title seven times since 1959, most recently in 2012.

Famous personalities from Katy include country music star Roger Creager, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton and Academy Award-winning actress Renée Zellweger.

Notable Areas in Katy
The city is also known for its many upscale neighborhoods. Some of these include Green Trails, Pin Oak Village, Grayson Lakes, Seven Meadows, new and growing Pine Mill Ranch, Silver Ranch, and Cinco Ranch. Cinco Ranch may be its best known, as it features areas for golfing, several parks, a YMCA and is home to the Katy Amateur Radio Society.
