Incorporated in 1933, Humble, Texas, is located northeast of the Houston metropolitan area. The city got its name from Pleasant Smith Humble, who opened the first post office in his home and later served as justice of the peace.

Humble became a player in the nation’s oil industry in the early 20th century and by 1905 its oilfield was the largest producing field in Texas. The town was home to the Humble Oil & Refining Company, founded in 1911, which later merged with the Exxon corporation. Its oil fields are still active to this day. The 1969 opening of the Houston International Airport brought much attention and business to this once quiet city, which now reports a population of approximately 15,000 people and 5,460 households.

The Humble Independent School District has three public elementary schools, one middle school and three high schools. All students attending the Humble Independent School District are eligible to attend Quest High School, a magnet high school in the Atascocita section of unincorporated Harris County. Humble is served by the Lone Star College System.

Former residents of Humble that have gone on to become public figures include 80th United States Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, NFL player Jackie Battle and aviator and film producer Howard Hughes, whose life story became the basis for the Oscar-winning Martin Scorsese film, The Aviator.  Speaking of Hollywood history, the DeLorean Motor Company, manufacturer of the DeLorean DMC-12, a sports car made famous by the science fiction film Back to the Future, has its only remaining private factory based in Humble. Additionally,, A PGA Tour Event, the Shell Houston Open, is played annually at Redstone Golf Club in Humble.
